If your child is wearing braces, you might be a bit anxious about how to cope with Halloween. You want them to enjoy all the traditional celebrations, but without damaging their teeth or worrying about broken brackets and wires. Broken braces can delay treatment, and nobody wants to have an emergency appointment with the dentist here at Dentapex!
We’ve put together a quick list of treats to avoid and those to enjoy with braces.
Treats to Avoid
Anything chewy or hard can damage braces and includes caramel, taffy, licorice, nuts, jellybeans and gummy bears, popcorn and caramel apples. Chewing these foods places brackets and wires under tremendous pressure, and because they are so sticky, they are extremely difficult to remove thoroughly by brushing and flossing teeth.
Treats to Indulge In
The good news is that even though the prohibited list seems long, there are still plenty of treats on the ‘safe’ list. Any chocolate bars are generally safe, but it is better not to bite down hard on big bars of chocolate, and it is best to avoid those containing nuts or crunchy pieces of caramel. Usually, it is better to break large chocolate bars into smaller pieces, or even better, buy fun-size treats.
